Mechanical Measurements & Metrology Lab

Measurement is the process of comparing unknown magnitude of certain parameter with the known predefined standard of that parameter and enables to obtain magnitude of certain parameters whose value is not known. Metrology is the scientific study of measurements, which covers the study of both the experimental and theoretical aspects of measurement and the determination of the levels of uncertainty of these aspects. The study of measurement is a basic requirement in any field of science and technology, most importantly in engineering and manufacturing. Since metrology is the study of measurement, it is expected to enforce, validate and verify predefined standards for traceability, accuracy, reliability, and precision. All of these are factors that would affect the validity of measurement. Consequently, these standards are verified and tested against a recognized quality system in calibration laboratories. Calibration is the process of the process of configuring an instrument to provide a result for a sample within an acceptable range.

This laboratory has various measuring devices such as Slip Gauge Set, Sine Bar & Sine Center, Micrometer, Bevel Protractor, Gear Tooth Vernier, Mechanical Comparator, Pressure Gauge, LVDT, Load Cell, Strain Gauge, Lathe & Drill Tool Dynamometer, Thermocouple, Toolmaker’s Microscope, Profile Projector. In this laboratory the students will learn the basics of the measurements of certain physical quantities such as length, angle, temperature, pressure, surface roughness etc. The students are also going to be exposed to the calibration of certain measuring devices such as thermo couple, load cell, micrometer etc.

On completion of this laboratory students will be able to calibrate certain measuring devices and measure the accurate value of various physical quantities. This laboratory helps students understand the importance of calibration of various measuring devices and also the importance of quality assurance in industries.
