The planning and design of all Civil Engineering projects such as construction of highways, bridges, tunnels, dams etc are based upon surveying measurements. Moreover, during execution, project of any magnitude is constructed along the lines and points established by surveying and it is the technique, profession and they are used to establish land maps, boundaries, locations of particular ownerships and all other purposes required by government and private sectors.
Surveying and land surveying is the measurement and mapping of our surrounding environment using mathematics, specialized technology and equipment. Surveyors measure just about anything on the land, in the sky or on the ocean bed.
Surveying also includes the technique of establishing points by predetermined angular and linear measurements. From the plans, sections and maps prepared by surveying, the area and volume of a particular plot of land can be calculated.
Surveying is a basic requirement for all Civil Engineering projects.
Other principal works in which surveying is primarily utilized are:
To fix the national and state boundaries
To chart coastlines, navigable streams and lakes
To establish control points
To execute hydrographic and oceanographic charting and mapping
To prepare topographic map of land surface of the earth.
